#Catalog of Shadows | 7 screen video-installation and part of the Stabat Mater project.

With choreographer Kristel van Issum, who for years led dance company T.r.a.s.h., i created #Catalog of Shadows, in which Ulrika Kinn Svensson examines seven female archetypes. Han Stubbe (DAAU) composed the soundtrack for the 30+ minute audiovisual installation. During the Boulevard festival it was presented in the Marienburg chapel in Den Bosch.

Choreografe Kristel van Issum definieert de vaak als verlicht afgebeelde moeder Maria in termen van donkerte en brengt haar zo terug tot aardse proporties. Associaties rondom verdriet en het grote lijden, de eeuwenlange beteugeling van vrouwelijke energie en vooral ook de eenzaamheid van de moeder, inspireerden haar tot een serie van zeven filmportretten op doek.

Samen met cineast Martin Kers neemt Van Issum ons mee in een minutieus observeren. In #Catalog of Shadows zetten zij film in als fotografisch middel en laten levensgrote foto's tot leven komen. Muziek en omgevingsgeluid gemaakt door componist Han Stubbe (bekend van de Vlaamse band DAAU) vormen daarin akkoorden en vervagen weer als schuim, nevel of damp. Soms duikt een moederlijke schreeuw op - een jammerklacht, stukgeslagen op de rotsen. De Zweedse actrice en danseres Ulrika Kinn Svensson geeft uitdrukking aan de verschillende karakters, met beweging in het minimale.

Zij is één vrouw, zeven archetypes. Elk met haar eigen motivatie en motieven. Zij is liefde, maar even zo zeer ook woede, wantrouwen, angst, minachting, trots, verzet en onmacht. Maskerade en ontmanteling. Ze is het allemaal. Zevenmaal een portret van de vrouwelijke schaduwzijde. Zeven stemmen: één akkoord. Over oude wonden en trauma’s die nooit verwerkt zijn. Over emoties en gedachten die we liever niet met elkaar delen. Over afweermechanismen en strategieën van afstandelijkheid en ontkenning. En over de misvattingen die die ontkenning in het dagelijks leven teweeg brengt.

Van Issum is geïnteresseerd in ingesleten rolmodellen, in het fuseren van niet verenigbare identiteiten. Ze richt zich met name op de vele rollen die we op ons nemen en de fysieke extensies die we daarvoor gebruiken. In haar werk vraagt ze zich af op welke manieren de buitenwereld ons innerlijke wezen beïnvloedt en op welke manier ons lichaam de buitenwereld bereikt. Dit kader dwingt om na te denken over identiteit. Haar idee is dat identiteit een fictie is, een illusie. In onze hedendaagse samenleving kunnen we iedere identiteit aannemen die we willen. Ook die van De Moeder…

Bij het fameuze Tilburgse collectief T.r.a.s.h. gaf de choreografe haar werk twintig jaar lang vorm, waar ze naast talloze voorstellingen ook samen met Martin Kers meerdere films maakte. Ulrika Kinn Svensson schitterde in het werk van T.r.a.s.h. als ook in dat van  gezelschappen Liquid Loft en Eastman (Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui). Binnenkort start het team ook de serie Stereotypes, een reeks korte dansfilms. Vanuit haar voorliefde voor iconische beelden is Van Issum zich steeds meer gaan toeleggen op beeldend werk. De choreografie beperkt zich niet tot het lichaam, in alles herken je de choreografische klik: in ritme, dynamiek, in hoe de omgeving bewogen wordt en de personages reliëf krijgen. De choreografie dringt door in beeldend werk.

‘#Catalog of Shadows’ is a series filmportraits; 'Intentional lives'. The work revolves around ‘speach-patterns’ and the unwritten rules in conversation, exaggerated bodylanguage and excessive behaviour. She represses traits (to not undermine her selfconcept) Her identity is hiding, her shadows the counterpoint of her ego: lurid melodrama, soap opera, exploitation, put-on and self-satires suspense, dreams, erotism and bizarre situations with even more bizarre characters. Touching on the topics of body enhancement and death. She appears in many roles... Giving a voice to her inner supressed beings. In this collection the female protagonist represents ‘real’ women dealing with grief, anxiety, suffering, mourning, hidden anger and their pre-conceptions with the desire to break out of their roles. They are motivated by the desire to survive in human manner. All the parts are the same woman in  different shapes and forms, with an ability for different accents. A woman with many faces.

Her shadow is our shadow. Seven characters, seven sreens, seven archetypes. Seven portraits of the female dark side.

Interior monologues. Multiple perspectives.
A single character inhabits multiple identities. The complexity of the mind.

Pushing boundaries of how characters are weaving their innerworld, the world of the mind, psychological revelations.
Exploring voice, sound and phonetics. Searching for the abstract in sounds.

It ‘s also about the phenomenon of acting; what is acting, ...is it taking up a role?

A text is the starting point for each character.
Characters that are related with certain accents, or even a language that we don’t understand. Or a character that is a bit spooky. Sessions. Humour. Satire. These characters are obviously a bit weird, stereotypes, the image doesn’t necessarily fit the character. Characters that look very styled, dressed up, outspoken... Hyperrealistic, over-the-top... Challenging the esthetics. Searching for the emotional life behind the words. The power is with the actress, she can take the audience anywhere.

For capturing the seven characters we had the opportunity to build a greenscreen studio in ‘de vrije ruimte’, one of the spaces in Theaters Tilburg. After weeks of rehearsals, that also took place here, we recorded them in 8 days.

After the recording process the production phase started. Each of the seven (actually eight) characters was supposed to have an onscreen ‘existence’ of about 30 minutes. This resulted in a complicated and logistic editing process. The character’s sequences were edited individually to get the desired length. After that each character’s timeline was placed in the physical line-up, to create a spatial composition.

The physical side of the project consisted of seven screens, measuring 120 x 272 cm. We chose for this aspect ratio to create a slim looking screen.
